  • Probat L12 Project | Part 2

Posted on June 5, 2013 by Venia Coffee Roasters | Keith

    Quick update:

The Probat L12 arrived this morning to our secret lair where she will live during the restoration. Lost a few heartbeats bringing her down off the truck, but it went really smooth, all things considered.

The driver didn't know what it was. His response when I told him was, "I was thinking it might be a still of some sort". I might be wishing it myself come a few weeks.

Can't hardly wait to give her a thorough inspection and figure out exactly what needs to be done, but that will have to wait a few days unfortunately.

  • Probat L12 Restoration & Modification

Posted on June 4, 2013 by Venia Coffee Roasters | Keith

We have just purchased a used Probat L12 coffee roaster and will be going through an extensive rebuild over the next few months. We thought it would be fun to share this process with our customers. It has been in use for 18 years without any major servicing, and the second owner of the last few years obviously didn't stick to any routine cleaning or preventative maintenance schedules. We have ourselves a fun summer project!

Mechanically, I was prepared for the worst and was pleasantly surprised that she turned right on and all systems seemed to work. The drum rotated smoothly and it sounded great. The fan guard on the motor was dented causing it to clatter.  That was fixed with a screwdriver and a mallet in about 2 minutes.  The gas line had been disconnected so our tests stopped there.

However, it was obvious that general maintenance and cleaning the past few years was not a priority.  The cooling airflow capacity was likely reduced to about half from the build-up of chaff in and below the cooling tray.  Upon taking the cooling tray off,  the shaft that rotates the cooling arm was completely lacking grease. I doubt any of the bearings have been greased in a few years.

Moving this beast was causing me a few sleepless nights.  I have done a lot of things in life, but moving one of these was not yet one of them.  Many thanks to our friends at Vitae Springs Vineyards, Tilla-Bay Farms, Olson Homes and Oregon Coastal Flowers for helping coordinate the move from Oregon to Washington.

    Probat L12 on the Truck

My heart skipped a few beats lifting her into the truck, but all went smoothly.  Once we get this delivered to us in Seattle we will give it a more thorough examination.  We already have a laundry list of restoration and modifications we want to accomplish.  I am sure there will be a few surprises along the way too!
